The Story

Master Hatters of Texas, Inc. was established in 1968 by William C. Cook in Garland, Texas. Cook began his career in the hat industry in 1936 with Byer-Rolnick Hat Company in Dallas, moving with them to Garland in 1939 where he became recognized as a Master Hatter. Initially, the company produced hats under contract for Resistol Hat Company before developing their own line. After Cook's passing in 1977, his two sons took over the family business. In 1988, Master Hatters entered a 20-year licensing agreement to develop hats for Wrangler Jean Company. Today, the company continues to manufacture straw, wool, and fur felt Western hats in their Garland facility, representing the premium tier of Western hat making with exceptional material quality and finishing.

Craftsmanship

The "Master" in Master Hatters reflects their approach to construction. Each hat is blocked with precision, with careful attention to crown symmetry and brim flatness. The felt is dense and smooth—run your hand across a Master Hatters 7X and you'll understand why people pay premium prices. Finishing details like binding, sweatband installation, and crease definition show the extra time invested. These aren't rushed mass-production hats; they're made by people who care about the craft.

“You don't survive 100+ years in the hat business by cutting corners.”

How It Compares

Master Hatters competes directly with Stetson's premium lines (6X and above) and Resistol's high-end offerings. At similar price points, Master Hatters often provides slightly better felt quality—their 7X genuinely feels richer than some competitors' 7X. Against American Hat Co., they offer similar quality at slightly lower prices but without the custom-order options. For premium felt without the $800+ luxury tier pricing, Master Hatters hits a sweet spot.
